  • I have not gotten a response in over a week from C1 regarding my problem
(XArrayDB licensing Nag screen comes up in executable EVEN on dev machine).

Please, I beg you, re-compile the XArrayDB OCX so it doesn't care about
licensing OR so that the fancier parts of it (Find, Quicksort, etc) only
work when it's tied to a TrueDBList, Combo, etc. (which aren't having
Licensing issues) and still remove the licensing issue. OR, tell me where
in the registry the licensing stuff is stored so I can change it manually.
OR, write and send me a little utility that does that for me so you don't
expose "trade secrets". I don't care, just stop worrying about the
licensing of what's basically a big array wrapper "helper" item. Free
    XArrayDB from its shackles!

PLEASE. I HAVE DEADLINES THAT HAVE PASSED AND THIS IS NOT BEING
    RESOLVED!!!!

And, yes, I have jumped through all the un-install, download updates,
re-install, C1REGSVR, etc. hoops (as stated in this newsgroup many times)
    WITH NO SUCCESS!!!

With all due respect, if you have something that pressing, I wouldn't rely
on these newsgroups, or at least not only on these newsgroups. You should
have called them directly and/or e-mailed their technical support. There's
still at least a day turn-around time on e-mail, but they do respond.

  • I have done that, Bill. That (a response to my email that I sent their Tech
Support) is what I'm referring to having not received in over a week. I'm
well aware of giving them time to respond. And, I've actually come in here
as a last resort, not a first one.

So, given 9 days (7 business days), they have not responded. Last email I
received from them (Oct 5) said that they had "escalated this issue ... to
our QA team for further research". So, this is escalation?

My initial email to them regarding this issue was on Sept. 15. I did not
start out impatient, I have grown that way. That's why I'm now begging
    them.

  • Hi Paul,

Do you use SourceSafe? If so, make sure you check out every module that uses
C1 objects and recompile. It took me over a month to figure this out.

I've been there and "feel your pain".

    Good luck!!!!

You have my sincere sympathies, then. They usually do respond to my e-mail
inquiries quickly, with like what you said - the escalated this issue form
response, but then they usually get back to me in another day, maybe two.
But then it's often "Send us a program that demonstrates the problem." As a
programmer, I understand why they need this, but my account app is HUGE.
Trying to make a small project that duplicates the problem is usually more
time-consuming than it's worth, so I generally just give up and try to find
other methods of fixing or working around the problem. What I can't
understand is that why a company as HUGE as Component One, with probably
dozens, if not hundreds of programmers, with just a few components that they
specialize in, can't produce better products. There is SO much I'd prefer
done in simple things like comboboxes for example, that you'd think would be
no-brainers, and things to make programming them a lot simpler, that are
just not there. Those things exist in other third-party components, but
then those other components often lack some of the things that C1 has. C1
is still the lesser evil for me, and their support sucks - you have to
subscribe constantly, even to fix bugs in older versions (rubber-stamp
response - Download latest version and try again - I CAN'T DO THAT). I wish
they'd look at features that their competition has (and even the INTRINSIC
CONTROLS - see: ListIndex) and make their products a bit better.

Sorry, that's my rant for the day.

If you ever find a better, decent combobox, that has multiple columns, and
is easier to work with, please let me know. I'm really getting sick of C1.

Thanks. It's now been over 2 weeks and no response.

Mr AllenS[C1] how has the escalation of my problem been dealt with? Or is
    that double-talk at Component One?

  • Exactly, Bill. The ol' run-around. I work for a branch of the Canadian
government, am fairly politically aware, so I can detect the "game" being
played here. I notice that AllenS[C1] hasn't responded at all. Wonder why?

I sent in the demo program (basically a form with just a TDBList) and the
code simply instantiated an XArrayDB object. That's it!!!! And they
    haven't gotten back to me.

Regarding your "can't produce better products" remark. It seems to me it's
like that of a drug pusher. It gives you a short term high but when you get
down deeper, only then do you see the problems. Okay, I blew that analogy,
    but you get my point.

Come on, C1, this stuff is SO CLOSE to being great. Just clean up the
little problems and make us go away!!!!

For anyone doing a google groups search to find bugs, I'll do this (sure
this is a private newsgroup but Google might grab it):
problem with TrueDBList, bug, annoyance, review, XArrayDB, license, not
working, doesn't work, don't buy, shouldn't buy, issue, poor rating, bad
    support.

It's now in your best financial interest to fix this. Let me re-iterate:
It's been two weeks since this issue was, ahem, "escalated".

When this is fixed I'll gladly come back and add a new post stating so.

  • Hi Paul,

    OK, try this....

    1. Make sure none of the forms using C1 are read only.

    2. Make a minor change to all the C1 objects in your project and try
    rebuilding.

These were other things I did and the issue eventually went away. I don't
know which fixed it but assumed it was something with change control and the
above could be related to SourceSafe.

    Good Luck!!!

  • I have the full subscription but I have to say I worry about using the .net components based on my experiances with the activex components. Exactly like crack, they hook you and keep you paying to get support and fixes. How many subscribers would they have if they just gave you new features and the bug fixes where free?

  • I am pleased to inform that Component One fixed this issue by re-compiling
the XARRAYDB OCX file as I hoped/suggested, having it disregard licensing
issues (afterall the TDB List/Combo is already licensed so what's the big
    deal).

If you are having license issues with this control ask them to send you the
update (or they should just post it for everyone so you don't have to ask
    because that would be better).

It took roughly 2 months for this issue to be resolved but at least it has
    been.

Ironically, of course, the day before I got the fix I gave up on them and
re-wrote the TDBList part of the app to not use the XArrayDB object. One of
my colleagues suggested that I should have given up 2 months ago and then I
would have gotten the fix then. Funny and sad.

Anyway, I consider this matter resolved for the better but, boy, do these
guys need to work on some things ...

Bill, Jake, and David: Thanks for your help

  • Hello,  I am having the same issue w/ an old app my company uses.  After recompiling users get the EVAL version message for XarrayDB Object.  Could you please send me the updated version or post a link so I could download.  It would be much appreciated!
