I am exporting my project documents into a specified target (Word 2003) template. The process worked fine the first few times, but now I'm getting the "Could not change document template" error. What can cause this? I'm not sure what has gone wrong. Is something wrong in my target word template? Is it a source template problem? or is it a Doc2Help problem?

Do you want to assign a template of your own to documents that are assigned to a C1 template? In order to understand your problem and try to find a solution it would help if you could provide more information, e.g.

• version and service release of  DocToHelp
• operating system
• template that is assigned to the documents you want to "export"

 Here's the set up I am using:

Windows XP 

DocToHelp Version: 2009.1.0.447

The documents I'm trying to export are assigned a simplified version of the target template. (word 2003). i.e without headers and footers and TOC.

This simplified template is also selected as my Source template.

Rereading you question I wonder whether I understand it correctly, i.e. what do you mean by exporting project documents?
If you want to assign another template to project documents using Word dialog tools > tamplates and addins I would suggest to do this while D2H is closed.
Or does this message "Could not change document template" come during compilation of a target (which target)?

 Ok, the error message appears when I try to compile a (manual) target. (Making any form of Help target works fine).

 Here's a copy of the build log:

1 - Introduction.doc
  Processing document comments...
  Applying character styles...

Could not change document template.
Aborted
** Build Failed.
 

The target template and the source template are both Word 2003 templates. The process was working fine but now I'm getting this error and I'm not sure why.

This looks as if your target template causes the problems. In order to verify this assumption I suggest to add one of target templates of C1 designed for manual to the project, i.e. one of the original templates that begin with C1H_Pr.... as target template for manual.

If the manual target compiles without problems with this original template then it is definitely your template that causes the problem, and you will have to look into it.

Thanks for the advice. I've done what you said and the process worked. There must be a problem with the target template.

In order to find out what's wrong in your template I suggest to start with a C1H_Pr... template and make modifications step by step, testing compilation between the steps. I also suggest not to remove the bookmarks that are in the template.
