Spread Designer


To provide a cell note for a cell

In the Spread Designer,

  1. Select a cell or block of cells.
  2. From the Book menu, choose Environment or press the Environment button ( ) on the Book toolbar.
  3. On the Environment tab in the Book settings box,
    1. Specify whether you want to display the cell note indicator, specify the shape, and whether you want the TextTipFetch event to occur by making one of the following choices from the Note Indicator drop-down list box:
      • If you want to display the cell note indicator and to have the TextTipFetch event occur, choose Show And Fire Event.
      • If you want to display the cell note indicator and to not have the TextTipFetch event occur, choose Show And Do Not Fire Event.
      • If you want to hide the cell note indicator and to have the TextTipFetch event occur, choose Do Not Show But Fire Event.
      • If you want to hide the cell note indicator and to not have the TextTipFetch event occur, choose Do Not Show or Fire Event.
    2. Choose the OK button.
  4. From the Cell menu, choose Note or press the Cell Note button ( )on the cell toolbar.
  5. Type the cell note text in the Note box.
  6. From the Book menu, choose Text Tip or press the Text Tip button ( ) on the Book toolbar.
  7. On the Text Tip tab in the Sheet Display Settings dialog box, specify that you want to display cell notes, whether you want cell notes to appear only when the control has the focus, and the location of the cell notes by setting the Display drop-down list box to a selection other than Off, as described in the following table:

    Note: The changes you make in Spread Designer on this dialog will affect both text tips and cell notes.

    If you want the cell note to display . . . Use this setting . . .
    Aligned to the top-left corner of the header or cell for which it appears at any time Fixed
    Aligned to the top-left corner of the header or cell for which it appears only when the control has the focus Fixed Focus Only
    Aligned to the pointer location at any time Floating
    Aligned to the pointer location only when the control has the focus Floating Focus Only

  8. If you want to customize the cell note appearance, on the Text Tip tab in the Sheet Display Settings dialog box,

    Note: The changes you make in Spread Designer on this dialog will affect both text tips and cell notes. If you want to customize text tips and cell notes differently, use the SetTextTipAppearance method in the IsFetchCellNote method within the TextTipFetch event.

    1. If you want to override the system settings for font characteristics,
      1. Choose the Font button.
      2. In the Font dialog box, specify the font name, style, size, and effects.
    2. If you want to change the background color for cell notes,
      1. Select BackColor from the drop-down list box under Color.
      2. Choose the Set button.
      3. Select a basic color or customize your color.
    3. If you want to change the text (foreground) color for cell notes,
      1. Select ForeColor from the drop-down list box under Color.
      2. Choose the Set button.
      3. Select a basic color or customize your color.
    4. If you want to change the cell note color, select CellNoteIndicatorColor under the Book and Book Colors menu option.
    5. If you want to change the cell note shape, select the Note Shape under the Book and Environment menu option.
  9. Choose the OK or Apply button.
